Platform Bird Feeders

A popular feeder among the many types of bird feeders is the platform bird feeder. Looks like a tray that is slightly elevated or totally mounted off the ground.

Platform bird feeders will attract a wide variety of birds. They are known to be non-exclusive bird feeders that mean they do not exclude any birds. They are accessible to large and small birds. They are simply to use and easy for birds to find. Almost any seed eating bird that sees it will come in and gives them a very comfortable feeding environment.

They can be on legs, hung or mounted on a pole, hung from a bracket on a fence or deck. Normally they have a removable, perforated bottom for easy cleaning and to assure proper drainage of the bird seed. It’s possible to offer any type of bird seed, bakery products or fruit in this type of feeder. Not only will the small perching songbirds enjoy the feeder, but is possible to attract many ground feeding birds as well.

The main difference between hanging bird feeders and platform bird feeders is that with a hanging bird feeder the bird seed is dispensed through a crack or a small opening in the bird feeder. With a platform bird feeder the bird seed is placed on a platform, or a plate and the birds peck the food from a pile or scattering.

Platform bird feeders can be also squirrel proof.  They can be placed off the ground by hanging them or using a pole to elevate them and a squirrel baffle wherein squirrels will not be able to reach it. Some have a screen on the feeder so that squirrels will have a hard time reaching the bird seeds.

One of the benefits of using a platform bird feeder is that it is very easy to manage. It’s possible to fill the feeder with bird seeds very easily and they are very visible to the avian. Since most platform feeders are open, it’s not hard to scatter the seeds on it. It is also very easy to clean compare to other types of feeders.

Among the drawbacks of this type of feeder is that it can be easily attack by large birds. The seeds can also be easily blown off during windy days and it can also be a source of illnesses if it is not properly cleaned.
